Sofa Disasters

I can’t tell you how many internet-bought sofa disasters I have come on the heels of, as an interior designer:

  • Cotton slipcovers shrunk beyond recognition
  • sofas leaking stains after steam cleaning
  • legs broken off
  • cushions turned uncomfortably lumpy

All of the above within two years of purchase!

The client can’t stand to enter their living room again, they are so angry at that lumpy, stained sofa, and the idea of having to spend that money again makes them sick.  They can’t even find a home for it through Craigslist; sadly, it will probably end up in the landfill.

Sofa Disasters

The client is ready now to spend that $3,500 minimum on a good sofa, unfortunately that’s on top of the $1,500 they already spent and a year after all the hassle and anger.

Which leads me to a topic near and dear to my heart:  Quality.

Quality Sofa

Quality

For your timeless and classic base to actually be – timeless – your building blocks need to be as high quality as you can afford.

With all of the furniture available on the Internet or in big box retail stores, it is easy to lose sight of the fact that not all furniture is made equal.  To ensure a sofa will last more than a couple of years, you have to be ready to investigate its makeup.

Shop for quality

What is quality?

If we were talking about clothing, we would check the fabric, the quality of the stitching, and consider the reputation of the manufacturer.  Then we would try it on to see if it fits, if it feels comfortable.

This is true of furniture as well.  But there is even more…..what’s inside….

When selecting a building block piece of furniture, inquire about the makeup of each of these components. Don’t take “I don’t know” for an answer!

Are you feeling overwhelmed by all the choices and details to consider when shopping for your Timeless and Classic Base? Don’t worry; I am putting together a special event to help with issues just like this so stay tuned!
